.Heres a faded R100s that has been waiting for new paint.
There will be 3 colors all under clear starting with a gold for the pinstripes as well as a base for the red followed by a black faded in across the pinstripe then clear coated in a familiar BMW paint scheme. We are lucky to have found a restored bike of the same vintage and colors online for an example to follow.
The tank had a added double tape stripe covering an original single faded one.
The replacment fairing is now in ABS.. A templet is made to guide the new stripe.
a few more pictures of the overall stripe and then it's time to prep for prime
When using chemical strippers covering with plastic keeps the parts "wet" and allows a longer soak even overnight.
now to add a little filler where needed to get everything ready for primer at the same time
Each defect is reinforced with epoxy resin and fibreglass cloth.
The front fender had a couple deep scratches and the outside of the side covers are leveled for the next step of a glazing filler
Here the tank is floated with a glazing putty (*Thin Iceing) and then most of it will be sanded off except for where it will just grace any hidden lows and inperfections..
all the parts are now primered with PPG's NCP280 primer sealer surfacer as well as guide coated with a contrasting mist of a black to aid in the next block sanding steps with 400 grit prior to color
on goes some gold (DBU) to make the stripes and to set the tone for the red
Here is where templets and before pics guide where the stripes go
adjustments are made and everything is checked and rechecked.
the templetes to guide but to get the lines smooth and flowing semi-free hand is the way. First thing I did before stripping off the old paint was to file a tiny mark on the metal edge so the end of the line is exactly where it needs to be and when everything is back on the bike they line up.
The second color after taping the stripe
referred by Kari
The side covers are getting black although they will be left uncleared for a toned down satin finish...
Cue the black ,,
A forth color would be adding a little pearled black in the base for the fade backed up with yet another couple passes with the regular black fading the other way so where the gold stripe is it is the plain black before pulling the tape creating the stripe and then everything gets clearcoated with 6 coats of PPG's DCD35 Clear .
Then to flat sand with 2000 grit and polish
And put it on the road
See whats happening now
Make it happen
See what happened since
